Rumors of war grow in Middle East while ministry marks 5 years

Posted by Robert Jimenez on September 24, 2007

Middle East (MNN) — Saber-rattling in the Middle East is making headlines again. Iran is threatening Israel, militants are bombing Lebanese Christians, and Israel declares Gaza an “enemy.”

In spite of war and rumors of war, SAT-7’s Debbbie Brink says SAT-7 Pars marks five years of ministry this year. “Since that channel has launched, our audience has grown tremendously. We’re hearing fantastic stories of people coming to Christ in those Farsi-speaking countries. We’re hearing a lot of reports on people watching this channel more than almost any other channel in Iran.”

Brinks says SAT-7 Pars deliberately chooses not to tackle political issues. Instead, their programming focuses on hope and peace. “I think we attract viewers in these times because they’re looking for an alternative message. They’re tired of all the conflict and the war, and they do see opportunities for learning more about God’s love, His forgiveness, reconciliation and peace.”

Pakistani Christian unexpectedly acquitted of blasphemy charges

Posted by Robert Jimenez on September 19, 2007

Pakistan (MNN) — Two days ago, a lower court in Faisalabad, Pakistan unexpectedly acquitted Shahid Masih of blasphemy. What’s unusual is that the lower courts of Pakistan rarely acquit “blasphemy” suspects. Voice of the Martyrs’ Todd Nettleton says it’s an answer to prayer. “It gives hope to the Christians in Pakistan that they have the opportunity for some kind of a just verdict even early on in the case without going through the appeal process, going all the way to the Supreme Court. I think, obviously, that is a good development.”

The acquittal drew a shocked response from both Christians and Muslims. Nettleton asks believers to pray that the publicity from this case will draw non-believers into the knowledge of Jesus Christ. “I think we can pray for the church in Pakistan, with the political turmoil that’s going on in their country. We can pray that the church will stand strong and that even as there’s so much upheaval going on, that they will be a witness for Christ and we’ll see new people come to know Christ in a personal way.”
